“When women celebrate, they don’t just acknowledge and appreciate God for His blessings, they also acknowledge the Blessed Virgin Mary’s role in the salvation of mankind”.
This was contained in the message delivered by the President of Catholic Women Organization, Port Harcourt Deanery, Mrs. Nkechi Ogonda Elikwu as they celebrated their 10th year anniversary.
The event took place on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at St Mary’s Catholic Parish, Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt.
The women also unveiled St. Theresa’s School of Entrepreneurship located at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mile 1 Diobu, Port Harcourt.
The centre will train interested women on various skills including sewing, catering, fish farming and liquid soap making, fascinator making, computer operation and auto Gele.
The President said that the theme: “Women, united in love and action” was chosen, because the voices and cries for political, ethnic and social unities were getting louder in the world today more than the Christian voice.
“We are troubled in all angles and for there to be meaningful development’ peace, love and unity must foster in our families, Church and in the society and women should be good disciples of Christ”, she said.
Mrs. Elikwu explained that the celebration provides a platform for the women to show love by doing something for God, the poor, the indigent and the neighbour through re-examination and re-engineering their selves so as to bear good witness for Christ in action.
She thanked the Bishop, Most Rev. Camillus Etokudoh, the Auxiliary Bishop Most Rev. Patrick Eluke, the Dean, Rev. Fr. Francis Normakoh, the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Clement Dekoo, their Co- Sponsors of the Anniversary and all who have been supporting them spiritually and morally over the years.
Earlier in the Mass, Fr. Normakoh advised the women to imitate Abraham in humility, generosity and hospitality. “Abraham never allowed the environment to influence his eagerness to make himself known to the strangers and haven known that charity begets favour, he went ahead to provide for them”, he said.
Fr. Normakoh who is also the Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt, charged the women on the need to always pay attention to the Master by combining the listening-life of Mary and the service-life of Martha in all their daily endeavours. He urged them not to judge others in the way they serve God.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Olisah congratulated the women and said that the 10th anniversary was timely and historic. He added that as ‘families’ watchdog’ the duty of modeling the children is theirs.
Chief Olisah enjoined them to do unto the men the way they are doing to themselves so that like them, the men would be on the same progressive and successful page.
