Msgr. Onwuli clocks 70, celebrates 40th Priestly ordination

The Vicar General of Port Harcourt Diocese, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Cyprian Onwuli, on Saturday, April 27, 2019 celebrated his 70th Birthday and 40th Priestly ordination.

The double celebrations attracted distinguished men and women from all walks of life including the former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Dr. Peter Odili and his wife, Justice Mary Odili, Supreme Knight of St. Mulumba, Sir Diamond Ovueraye, Brig. Gen. Steve Ekwulibe among others.

The event was held at Church of the Nativity Parish, Rumuewhara, Oroigwe, Port Harcourt.

The Catholic Bishop of Port Harcourt Diocese, Most Rev. Camillus Etokudoh, congratulated Msgr. Onwuli for the memorable celebration which according to him, calls for thanksgiving to God who has showered his blessings upon the celebrant for the past 70 years.

He appreciated the celebrant for his personal disposition and generous contribution towards the growth and work of evangelization in the Diocese.

In his homily at the Holy Mass, the Diocesan Vicar for the Clergy, Rev. Fr. Donatus Ukulor thanked God for the call of Msgr. Onwuli to the priesthood of Christ to bring good tidings to the afflicted and to bind up the broken hearted.

Fr. Ukulor recalled that 40 were mentioned about 143 times in the Bible and gave relevant passages. “Msgr. Onwuli is rich with experience of the priestly ministry. We are here to felicitate with a simple, humble, hospitable and smiling priest”, he said.

The homilist told the congregation that the life and pastoral ministry of Msgr. Onwuli is worthy of emulation.

In a brief biography about the celebrant, Msgr. Onwuli was between 1954 -1958, attended Sacred Heart Primary School, Umuechem, Ajeromi Central School, Olodi Lagos and Santa Maria High School, Omoku for his secondary school and subsequently St. Theresa’s Minor Secondary, Ibadan where he completed his secondary school formation.

Upon the recommendation of his Bishop, then Cardinal Dominic Ekandem, Msgr. Onwuli proceeded to Marianum in pursuit of the philosophical lap of his priestly formation. He was later sent to Bigard Memorial Seminary Enugu for formation in Theology  and was ordained a Catholic Priest on April 21, 1979.

Msgr. Onwuli has served the Church since his priestly ordination in a number ways especially in his learning in Canonical jurisprudence.

He has also served as Diocesan Director of Pontifical Mission Societies, Diocesan Chairman, Committee for Blessed Michael Tansi Beatification, Diocesan Secretary/Chancery, member Diocesan College of Consultors, presently the Vicar General of the Diocese of Port Harcourt, member National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Port Harcourt etc.

In his speech, Msgr. Onwuli appreciated all and sundry for the honour done him. He thanked the local organizing committee for their effort, family, friends and well-wishers for their love and prayers.

Highlights of the celebration were Holy Mass, cutting of cake, book review by Very Rev. Msgr. Pius Kii titled “The man in Priestly Robe”, book launched and parade by the Knights of St. John International.
